After installing and running the program, the user just needs to type the name of the file he would like to search and, optionally, select the type of content he is looking for, which can be audio, video, images and so on. Choosing one of these categories can narrow the search results. After finding the desired file, the user can easily download it just by double clicking on it. Alternatively, he can use the Download feature from the context menu.

Ares allows downloading an unlimited number of files at the same time. Besides that, certain types of files can be previewed directly in the interface before they are downloaded, for example, music files. This will allow the user to make sure that the found file is exactly the one he is looking for. The program's tabbed interface also includes a chat feature, which allows one to communicate with the users whom he got the files from. There are also numerous channels where one can enter and chat, similar to the ones included in the IRC network.

Using the Control Panel feature, the user can configure every aspect of the program's functionality. For example, he can modify the port and the maximum number of files that can be downloaded at the same time. Besides that, one can also customize the file saving folder.
